In just eight months and four days, Italy has almost matched the entire annual death toll for fatal accidents in the road haulage sector: as of September 4, 2026, 129 truck drivers have already lost their lives on the job.
In 2023, the total number of fatalities among truck drivers for the whole year was 134. At the current pace, 2026 is on track to break every previous grim record. This is a "primacy" that the Meloni Government and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini should be deeply ashamed of.
RACE TOWARDS 1,000 TOTAL WORKPLACE DEATHS
This tragedy in transport is part of a wider national emergency. Today, Italy is rapidly racing toward 1,000 total workplace fatalities since the beginning of the year. At this unrelenting rate, we will cross this horrific threshold within a week at most.
A thousand workers killed on the job is not an abstract statistic—it is a systemic collapse of safety rights.
VENETO: THE EPICENTER OF THE SLAUGHTER
In this terrifying map of death, the Veneto region holds the black jersey as the most severely affected area in Italy. Veneto—a crucial hub for logistics and the industrial economy of the North-East—has been turned into an open-air slaughterhouse for those who drive heavy vehicles.
We are not only talking about devastating highway crashes that endanger all commuters. We are talking about:
• Heroes of the wheel found dead in their cabs in truck stops and service areas, killed by grueling work hours and sudden cardiac arrests before anyone notices.
• Workers crushed or run over during loading and unloading operations in logistics yards and factory bays.
CASCADING SUB-CONTRACTS AND PRECARITY: THE REAL CAUSES
This mass mortality among workers is not bad luck—it is the direct outcome of reckless political choices:
1. Cascading sub-contracts introduced by Salvini: The deregulation of public procurement and the "Wild West" of subcontracting push companies into endless race-to-the-bottom pricing, dumping costs and delivery pressures onto the drivers' health and lives.
2. The blackmail of precarious labor (from Renzi to today): The removal of protections (such as Article 18 of the Italian Labor Code in 2015) transformed private sector labor into a form of legalized exploitation. Workers under modern precarious contracts face the constant threat of dismissal: they can be fired at any moment under false pretenses with a tiny payout.
To keep their jobs, drivers are forced to accept exhausting shifts, unsafe speeds, and skipped rest breaks.
WHAT MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY
Stopping this carnage is possible, but it requires the political will to eliminate job insecurity and restore genuine open-ended employment contracts. As long as labor is treated as a disposable commodity and roads as racetracks for unchecked logistics, our truck drivers will continue to die in widespread silence.
